Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul is one that has a long history of temple in Bali, especially in districts Gianyar. Tirta Empul Temple located in Manukaya village, Sub district of Tampaksiring, Gianyar regency. It is about 39 km eastwards from Denpasar town. This temple is very famous for its sacred springs that are used by the Balinese people as a sacred bathing place which they called "Genah Melukat".

Other than that near the temple was also built Istana Presiden Tampaksiring (Tampaksiring Presidential Palace) whose construction is carried out during the reign of President Sukarno. Tirta Empul also close to the location of Gunung Kawi Temple.

History
There is folklore about Tirta Empul Temple. Said there used to be a king who holds King Mayadenawa. During the reign, the king have bad tempers and often torturing people. This made Bhatara Indra / God Indra (Sun Deity) angry and eventually dispatched the Gods to attack King Mayadenawa. During the King Mayadenawa forced to area of Tampaksiring. Here he uses his power to create a poisoned spring. The Gods who drink from the springs is dead. See this, God Indra then creating an antidote spring. This spring is then trusted by the Balinese people as the source of Tirta Empul, where the word "Tirta Empul " itself means sacred spring. Then near the sacred spring was built a temple which was then known as the Pura Tirta Empul (Tirta Empul Temple).
